Which Vehicle Do You Need in Thailand? Sedan, SUV, Minivan or Alphard

Choosing between Thailand transfer vehicles starts with three things: the people travelling, the seats they need and everything that has to fit in the luggage area. A couple with two suitcases has different requirements from a family with two child seats, a pushchair and four bags, even if both groups are looking at the same vehicle category.

Use this guide to compare Thailand transfer vehicles, from sedan and SUV to minivan and Alphard before requesting your quotation. The examples below show what to ask about, rather than guaranteeing that a particular collection of bags fits every vehicle.

Thailand transfer vehicles: a quick comparison

Vehicle optionSPNJ’s published starting capacityWhat to check for your booking
SedanUp to 3 passengers and 2 large suitcasesCabin bags, child seats and any unusually large case
SUVUp to 4 passengers and 4 large suitcasesActual bag sizes, pushchair and passenger-seat arrangement
Minivan or vanUp to 9 passengers; luggage capacity confirmed for the actual seating layoutSize of every bag, bulky equipment and space with the required seats in use
Alphard: luxury option, considerably higher priceConfirm the offered vehicle and layout in your quotationAvailability, passenger seats, child-seat fitting and luggage space

The sedan and SUV starting figures come from our published Bangkok airport-transfer vehicle options. They are a starting point for an enquiry. Cabin bags, folded pushchairs, child seats and oversized items still need to be included when we review your journey.

When a sedan is the sensible starting point

A sedan is worth considering for one or two adults with straightforward luggage, such as two regular large suitcases. It can also be an option for a small group travelling light, subject to the confirmed passenger and bag arrangement.

Do not treat an empty passenger seat as a substitute for proper luggage space. If you are bringing a large hard-shell case, golf bag or folded stroller, tell us before assuming the sedan will work.

Example: two adults, two suitcases and two small backpacks. Start by asking about a sedan, then send the suitcase sizes and explain where the backpacks need to travel. Adding a travel cot or pushchair changes the enquiry even though the passenger count stays the same.

When to ask about an SUV

An SUV is a useful category to discuss when your luggage or family equipment makes a sedan uncertain. The important question is how much usable luggage space remains with the agreed passenger seats and child seats in place.

Example: two adults, two children, two child seats, three suitcases and a folded stroller. Ask us to assess the whole arrangement. Four passengers falling within the published SUV passenger limit does not by itself confirm that all of those belongings will fit.

If you have four adults and four large cases, include the cabin bags too. “Four suitcases” and “four suitcases plus four carry-ons” are different loads.

Real SUV luggage examples

This photo shows an actual luggage load. Hard cases, soft bags and bulky equipment use the space differently. It does not establish a passenger limit or guarantee that the same load fits every SUV; the model, seating arrangement and bag dimensions still need to be checked.

When enquiring, photograph all your luggage together, include folded pushchairs or other equipment, and send dimensions where possible. Add the number of adults and children and any child-seat requests so we can review seating and luggage space together.

When to choose a minivan

Start with a van enquiry if your group exceeds the smaller vehicle options or has substantial luggage. A van may also be worth considering for a smaller family carrying bulky equipment. The decision should reflect the load, rather than passenger numbers alone.

Travelling with six adults? Send photos and sizes of all your bags before choosing the vehicle. Six large suitcases are too much for the minivan arrangement described here. If everyone brings a large case, ask us to review an alternative transport arrangement.

Passenger capacity does not mean one large suitcase per person. With more seats occupied, luggage space still needs to be checked separately. Include cabin bags, pushchairs and other bulky items so we can confirm an arrangement that fits.

Alphard: the more luxurious option

The Alphard is the more luxurious option and is considerably more expensive than our standard sedan, SUV and minivan options. It suits travellers who specifically want the luxury cabin experience. Request a separate Alphard quotation for your date and route. If you would like an Alphard, name it in your enquiry and ask us to confirm availability and the offered layout. Do not assume that a model name guarantees a particular number of passenger seats, a specific child-seat arrangement or room for every suitcase.

Ask these questions before confirming:

  • Is an Alphard available for our date and route?
  • How many passenger seats will be available in the offered vehicle?
  • Where will the requested child seats be fitted?
  • Will all of our luggage fit with those seats in use?
  • Is the named vehicle confirmed, or is the quotation for a vehicle category?

Example: a couple who would like more space during a longer journey can ask about an Alphard, but should still declare their cases. A family carrying a large travel system needs a luggage check even if the cabin looks spacious in a photograph.

Send photos of the folded stroller and all your luggage

A photo is often clearer than describing a pushchair as “normal size.” Fold it exactly as it will travel, and include any separate carrycot, seat unit or removable parts. Photograph the suitcases, cabin bags and other bulky items as well.

If the bags are not packed yet, send their approximate dimensions and a photo of the luggage you intend to use. Say if you plan to add shopping or extra cases before the return journey.

  • Count large cases, cabin cases and soft bags separately.
  • Include travel cots, golf clubs and other long items.
  • Explain whether a wheelchair folds and whether the passenger transfers to a vehicle seat.
  • Send the number of adults and children alongside the photos.

A vehicle photo can help you understand the proposed arrangement, but it should show the relevant seating and luggage configuration. An exterior picture alone cannot answer how your equipment will fit.

Child seats change the seating plan

When comparing Thailand transfer vehicles for a family, check the child seat and vehicle instructions together. The NHTSA car-seat selection and installation guide explains why the seat must suit both your child and the vehicle. This is general fitting guidance; confirm the actual seats available for your booking with us.

For each child, send their age, height and weight. Tell us how many child seats are needed, or provide the model and installation requirements if you are bringing your own.

Do not assume three children can share the space normally shown for three adults, or that every available seat position accepts your chosen child seat. Confirm compatibility and the final passenger arrangement before booking. Availability and any charge for requested seats should appear in your quotation.

Airport luggage and sightseeing bags are different

Your choice of Thailand transfer vehicles may change between journeys. A vehicle that suits your hotel-to-hotel journey may be more space than you need for a local outing after your suitcases are left at the hotel. Equally, a day trip that finishes at the airport must carry the full holiday luggage from the first pickup.

For a journey across several days, list each hotel change and the final drop-off. If your plan includes shopping, tell us whether you expect extra bags. Review the luggage requirements again for the return airport transfer.

For a route such as Bangkok, Ayutthaya and Kanchanaburi over five days, send the full itinerary so luggage handling can be considered alongside each transfer.

Frequently asked questions

Are passenger capacity and luggage capacity the same thing?

No. You need a suitable passenger seating plan and enough space for every bag. Child seats and bulky items should be reviewed with the proposed vehicle.

Do children count towards passenger numbers?

Yes. Include every child and request the appropriate seating arrangement. Do not leave infants out of the passenger total.

Can I choose an Alphard specifically?

Include the request in your enquiry. Confirm availability, the offered vehicle and layout, and whether the named model is part of the agreed booking.

Will an SUV fit four large suitcases and a pushchair?

The published suitcase figure is a starting point. Send the sizes and a photo of the folded pushchair so the complete load can be checked.

Can a smaller group book a van?

You can request one. A smaller group may need more luggage space, but the available vehicle and arrangement still need confirmation for the journey.

What if our return journey has more luggage?

Tell us when enquiring, or update the team as soon as your plans change. The return vehicle should be reviewed against the return passenger and bag requirements.
