Khao Yai Travel Guide: Family Trips, Nature, Food & Cafés

Table of Contents hide

This Khao Yai travel guide brings together the things I enjoy about visiting with my family: strawberry picking in the colder months, flower gardens, cafés, countryside views and good food. It also covers the national park, the journey from Bangkok and choosing accommodation that works with your plans.

My recommendation for a first visit is two nights. A day trip can work for a focused outing, but an overnight stay gives you more time for nature, meals and your hotel without doing both long drives in one day.

Why Khao Yai has always been a family favourite for me

My parents used to take me to Khao Yai towards the end of the year. I remember cowboy shows, dressing up and sitting on hay. Those childhood trips are part of why I still associate Khao Yai with the colder months and family time.

These days, some of my favourite things are taking the kids strawberry picking, visiting flower gardens for photographs and planning a good meal along the way. I also enjoy the fruit sold beside the road and the many cafés with pretty places to sit and take photos. The cowboy shows are a childhood memory; check current programmes before planning a visit around a show.

Khao Yai National Park or the wider holiday area?

Khao Yai National Park is where you go for forest trails, waterfalls and wildlife. The wider holiday area includes hotels, resorts, pool villas, vineyards, restaurants and cafés around Mu Si, Thanarat Road, Phaya Yen and Pak Chong.

A hotel described as being in Khao Yai is not necessarily inside the park or close to your chosen attractions. Check its exact map location and the drives between your accommodation, meals and activities before booking.

The journey from Bangkok to Khao Yai

How long should you allow?

The Tourism Authority of Thailand describes Khao Yai as approximately a three-hour drive from Bangkok. Use that as a starting estimate rather than a promised arrival time. Your pickup address, resort location, traffic and breaks affect the journey. Driving into the park and between its attractions adds time beyond reaching the wider area. Tourism Authority of Thailand destination information.

With children, plan a toilet and food break. If you are arriving at Suvarnabhumi Airport (BKK) or Don Mueang Airport (DMK), allow for arrival formalities and baggage before the road journey starts. Following a long flight, going directly to your accommodation may suit everyone better than sightseeing immediately.

My favourite restaurant stops on the way

Chokchai is a favourite for burgers. In my opinion, the burger house is the best of the two and serves one of the best burgers in Thailand. Check the exact branch when planning your stop. Chokchai Burger has its own listing separate from the steakhouse.

My other favourite is ครูต้อ, or Khru To, for German pork knuckle. The restaurant is listed on Mittraphap Road in Muak Lek. Confirm the branch, route access and dish availability before making a special stop. Khru To restaurant listing.

If you would like either stop during a private transfer, mention it when requesting your quotation so the driving route and waiting time can be agreed.

How to get around during your stay

For help choosing transport and planning stops, read our guide to hiring a private driver in Thailand.

A private driver suits visitors who want an agreed pickup, vehicle and itinerary. Self-drive can suit confident drivers who have checked licence requirements, rental terms and insurance. Bus or train travel can form part of the journey, but you still need onward transport and a way to explore. The park advises that there is no transport service available inside it. Official visitor guidance.

Arrange transport for your stay as well as your arrival. A one-way resort transfer does not automatically include a driver waiting or taking you to dinner. See our Khao Yai transfer and private-driver options for booking arrangements.

Khao Yai weather and the best time to visit

I particularly enjoy the colder months for family outings and flower photographs. The national park describes the cool season as October to February, the hot season as March to May, and the rainy season as June to September. These are broad patterns, not a forecast for your dates. Official climate guide.

SeasonWhat to considerHow I would plan
October to FebruaryCooler mountain conditions and eveningsBring a light layer; check flower displays and strawberry-picking availability
March to MayWarmer conditions, varying with elevationWalk early and leave time for shaded or indoor breaks
June to SeptemberRain, green scenery and changing trail conditionsKeep the itinerary flexible and check park access

Do not expect every restaurant terrace or lower resort area to stay cool throughout the day. Check the forecast for your accommodation and activities, and pack sun protection alongside a light jumper. Flower displays and picking availability depend on the farm and growing conditions.

Khao Yai for families

Chokchai Farm with kids: animals, dairy and burgers

Chokchai Farm in Pak Chong can be a family outing as well as a food stop on the journey to Khao Yai. I have taken my children there, and the photo below is from one of our visits.

The farm combines animals and dairy farming with tours and family activities. Its current website lists tractor tours and a drive-your-own-car farm experience. If you want to see the milk factory or learn about milk production, ask which dairy areas and demonstrations are included in your chosen tour, as programmes can change. There are also dairy products to try or take home, including the farm’s Umm!..Milk ice cream.

There is a steakhouse and a separate burger house. My personal pick is the burger house: I think it serves one of the best burgers in Thailand. It is one of my favourite stops on the way to Khao Yai, even when we are not planning a full farm visit.

Check Farm Chokchai’s official website for the current activities and tour arrangements, and Chokchai Burger for restaurant details. Allow extra time if you want to combine lunch with a tour.

Strawberry picking in the colder months

Taking the kids strawberry picking is one of my favourite outings. It gives them something to do themselves and adds variety to a trip that might otherwise involve lots of scenery and photographs.

Contact the farm before travelling. Selling strawberries does not necessarily mean picking is available that day. Ask whether there is ripe fruit, how picking is charged and whether you need to book. A local hotel also includes strawberry picking and winter flower gardens in its suggested outings. Lacol Khao Yai seasonal outing ideas.

Choose a manageable nature visit

The park lists the Visitor Center–Kong Kaew trail as a 1.2-kilometre loop taking around 45 minutes to one hour, without a mandatory guide. Ask staff about current conditions and whether it suits your group. A short walk is not automatically pushchair accessible. Official hiking information.

Build the day around your children’s walking ability and routine. One outdoor activity, lunch and a rest can be enough. Share child-seat requests and pushchair or luggage details when booking transport. Check pool access and barriers at your accommodation if travelling with young children.

Khao Yai for couples

For a couple’s trip, I would choose one main activity each day and leave time for a good meal and the accommodation. A flower garden followed by a café makes a lighter outing; a park visit can be the focus of a more active day.

Vineyard dining is another option. GranMonte has VinCotto, and PB Valley has the Great Hornbill restaurant. Check tour and dining arrangements directly, including return transport if you plan to taste wine. GranMonte and PB Valley dining.

Vineyards when you do not drink wine

My dad used to take us to wineries in Khao Yai. I have never liked wine, but I remember grape juice for the children. I would not automatically rule out a vineyard visit if someone in your group does not drink.

Look at the setting, food and non-alcoholic options as well as the tasting. Ask the venue whether children can join, whether grape juice is currently available and what package suits non-drinkers.

Khao Yai for nature lovers

If forest walks and wildlife are the main reason for your visit, give the national park a proper place in the itinerary. Choose a base that suits your intended entrance and leave café detours for another day.

Trails, guides and waterfalls

Choose walks by length, terrain and guide requirements. Some routes require a guide, including Km. 33–Nong Phak Chi. Confirm current access with park staff. A transport driver and a forest guide perform different roles, so check what your booking includes. Park trail descriptions.

Haew Suwat is a waterfall option to consider. Haew Narok involves a walk and a steep, narrow staircase, which matters for children and visitors with mobility needs. Swimming is prohibited at these waterfalls. Official attraction and access information.

Wildlife and night activities

Elephants, deer, gibbons and macaques live in the park, but sightings cannot be guaranteed. Enjoy the forest itself as part of the visit. Official wildlife information.

Follow ranger instructions around wildlife. For elephants on the road, the park advises keeping at least 30 metres away and avoiding horns and flash photography. Stay in your vehicle rather than approaching for a photograph. The organised night safari is a separate activity; private driving to look for animals at night is prohibited. Check booking arrangements with the visitor centre. Official night-safari guidance.

Khao Yai for photography: flowers, scenery and cafés

Flower gardens are another reason I enjoy visiting during the colder months. I like leaving enough time for photographs rather than fitting the garden between several other attractions.

Check recent photographs from the garden before choosing it. Planting and flowering change, so a picture from a previous season is not a guarantee of the same display. Stay on the paths and avoid stepping into the beds.

Oria Café in Khao Yai

Oria Café is one of the café stops from my Khao Yai visits. I photographed ducks there and a playful washing line hung with Santa clothes during my visit. Include a café break when you want to slow down between sightseeing and take a few photographs.

Check current opening arrangements with Oria Café before travelling. Ask before using facilities or arranging a professional photo session.

For scenery, leave room for changing light and weather. Protect camera equipment from rain, and follow park access rules rather than stepping off a marked route for a clearer view.

Khao Yai for food lovers

Food is part of the trip for me. Choose one or two meals you particularly want, then arrange nearby activities around them. Driving across the area for every meal leaves less time to enjoy the places you visit.

Local Thai food and suckling pig

Suckling pig, or moo han, is one of the dishes I associate with Khao Yai. Ask your chosen restaurant about portion sizes and whether it needs ordering ahead, particularly for a couple or a small family.

Other dishes to look for include grilled chicken, som tam, larb, soups and stir-fried dishes with rice. Menus vary. For children, ask whether chilli can be served separately. Explain dietary restrictions clearly, including fish sauce, shrimp paste and stocks where relevant.

Western food, meats and sausages

I also enjoy Khao Yai for good meats and sausages. My personal journey stops are Chokchai for burgers and Khru To for German pork knuckle. Other options to consider, based on their published menus, include:

  • Midwinter: its published menu includes European dishes such as pork knuckle, barbecue ribs and pizza alongside Thai food. Check Midwinter’s menu.
  • Great Hornbill at PB Valley: publishes Thai, Western, fusion and vegetarian choices, including wood-fired pizza. PB Valley restaurant information.
  • VinCotto at GranMonte: offers Thai and Western food in a vineyard setting. Confirm current service and reservations directly. VinCotto dining information.

Roadside fruit

I enjoy seeing the fruit sold beside the road. What is available changes, and I would not assume everything displayed was grown at the stall itself. Ask what is in season and choose somewhere your driver can pull in safely.

If you enjoy discovering Thai sweets too, read our guide to Thai desserts.

Where to stay: hotels, resorts and pool villas

Khao Yai travel guide: pool at the mountain villa Natalie rented
The mountain pool villa I rented during a Khao Yai stay. Photo: Natalie.

On one of my visits, I rented a pool villa in the mountains. Having the pool and mountain setting was part of the experience, so I would leave time to enjoy the accommodation rather than fill every hour with outings.

Khao Yai has hotels, resorts and pool villas, including very luxurious places to stay. Some are tucked away in the countryside and can feel as though they are in the middle of nowhere. That can be lovely for a quiet break, but you need a car or arranged transport to get around.

Before booking, check the exact map location rather than relying on the name Khao Yai. Look at the drive to restaurants, the national park and the activities you want. Do not assume there will be places to eat within walking distance or transport waiting outside.

AccommodationWhat to check
HotelRoom layout, breakfast, restaurant access and parking or driver pickup
ResortDistance between facilities, on-site dining and drives to planned outings
Pool villaPool safety, bedroom arrangements, meal options and transport for your stay

Families should check child arrangements and pool safety. Couples may enjoy a secluded villa, but arrange the return from dinner beforehand. A beautiful property can be the main reason for the trip, so leave time to enjoy it.

A relaxed three-day, two-night itinerary

Use this as a planning example and adjust it for your dates, accommodation and interests.

DaySuggested plan
Day 1Travel from Bangkok with a planned food stop, check in and choose a nearby café if everyone feels rested
Day 2Choose a park-focused day, or a seasonal family day with strawberry picking and a flower garden; return with time to rest before dinner
Day 3Relaxed breakfast, one convenient vineyard or café stop, then return to Bangkok

Nature lovers can replace the lighter stops with more park time. Food lovers can plan around a reserved lunch. If you only have one day, choose a focused park outing or a countryside, food and photography route. Avoid combining both into an overfilled schedule.

Choose a park day or a countryside day

PlanSuggested dayArrange ahead
National parkHotel → agreed park entrance → suitable walk or waterfall → lunch → hotelPark access, admission, vehicle entry and a guide where required
Farms, flowers and cafésHotel → farm or seasonal garden → lunch → one nearby café → hotelNamed venues, picking availability and current flower displays
Food and vineyardsHotel → booked vineyard visit or lunch → one convenient stop → hotelTour places, dining reservations and arrangements for children or non-drinkers

These are examples to help you choose, not fixed tours. I would keep the park as the main activity if you want forest time. For a lighter day, choose farms, flowers and lunch without adding a long drive through the park as well.

What needs booking, and what is seasonal?

  • Strawberry picking and flower gardens: seasonal. Ask the farm what is available on your dates before planning around it.
  • Chokchai: confirm the tour programme and booking arrangements. A burger stop and a farm tour need different amounts of time.
  • Vineyard tours and special meals: check reservations and timings with the venue.
  • Guided walks and night activities: check the park’s current arrangements. A driver and a trail guide are separate roles.

Which transport should you book?

  • One-way transfer: a drive to your hotel or back to Bangkok.
  • Return transfers: arrival and departure journeys on your chosen dates.
  • A sightseeing day: hotel pickup, agreed stops and a return journey, with waiting and duration included in your quotation.
  • Transport over several days: send the complete itinerary so we can check availability and quote for each day’s arrangements.

Include your hotel map link, dates, adults and children, luggage and child-seat requests. Tell us about any booked activity times and when you need to be back.

Practical checks, park fees and packing

The official park page lists foreign visitor admission at Pak Chong and Noen Hom as 400 baht for adults and 200 baht for children, with vehicle fees separate. Confirm applicable charges before travelling. General opening hours are published as 06:00–18:00; organised evening activities have separate arrangements. Check current closures for your chosen trails and viewpoints. Official park entry fees.

Pack walking shoes, water, sun protection, insect repellent, a rain layer and a light jumper. Add spare clothes for children and protection for photography equipment. For a rainy-day alternative, consider an indoor meal or the Khao Yai Art Museum, checking current hours first. Art museum visitor information.

Frequently asked questions

Is Khao Yai worth visiting without entering the national park?

Yes, if your interests are countryside accommodation, food, vineyards, flower gardens and cafés. Forest walks and wildlife need a separately planned park visit.

How many nights should we stay?

I recommend two nights for a first visit so you have a full day between arrival and departure. One night can suit a shorter break with fewer activities.

Do we need a car in Khao Yai?

Yes, you need a car or a pre-arranged driver to explore Khao Yai. This is a mountainous countryside area, with hotels, resorts, restaurants and attractions spread out. Do not rely on public transport between your accommodation and sightseeing stops. Without your own car or arranged transport, you can end up limited to your hotel or resort. Arrange transport for the whole stay, including meals and the return journey.

Can we pick strawberries throughout the year?

No. Strawberry picking is a colder-month activity, not a year-round attraction. It is one of the activities I look forward to on end-of-year trips. If you are planning for October, November or December, contact the farm first to check whether picking has started and ripe fruit is available. The picking season varies by farm and weather and can extend into the early months of the following year.

Can children and non-drinkers visit a winery?

Yes, children and non-drinkers can enjoy a vineyard visit too. Khao Yai wineries such as PB Valley and GranMonte also have restaurants, so a visit can include lunch and scenery rather than wine tasting. My childhood visits included grape juice for the children. Check the chosen winery’s current tour arrangements, child access and non-alcoholic drinks before booking.

Are child seats, sightseeing and guides included in a transfer?

Request child seats and sightseeing when enquiring. Availability and any charge need confirmation. A direct transfer does not automatically include waiting, attraction visits or a licensed guide.
