Choose a day out or a longer family break
The best family day trips from Bangkok depend on how much driving your family wants to do and what you want to enjoy when you arrive. Choose a manageable destination, a short list of stops and time for lunch and breaks. An island stay needs different planning from a same-day outing.
For my family, staying further out can work well because we have a car and can drive to attractions and activities. If you are visiting without your own vehicle, decide whether you need a direct transfer, a car for sightseeing or transport on several dates. Public transport or an individual taxi journey may suit a simple outing; a prearranged driver can be useful when you want several agreed stops and waiting.
1. Pattaya and Jomtien: choose one main activity
Pattaya and Jomtien are options for a day out or a longer beach stay. We prefer Jomtien for our family. Choose one main activity rather than trying to combine a beach visit, a waterpark and several attractions in the same day.
Ideas include the Sanctuary of Truth, Columbia Pictures Aquaverse or time by Jomtien Beach. Check current opening times, ticket arrangements and any height or age restrictions with the venue before booking. Ask for the journey to be assessed from your actual Bangkok pickup point, with a realistic return time and breaks.
2. Rayong and Koh Samet: check the connections
For Rayong, decide whether you want time on the mainland or a transfer to a pier for Koh Samet. These are different itineraries. A road transfer to Ban Phe does not itself include a boat crossing or island transport.
If you are considering Koh Samet, allow separately for the road journey, boat check-in, crossing and the journey to your accommodation. Confirm the correct pier and boat arrangements before arranging your pickup. For a family beach break, compare an overnight stay with the amount of travel a same-day return would involve.
3. Koh Chang: plan a longer stay
Treat Koh Chang as a longer break rather than a family day trip from Bangkok. Plan the road journey and ferry separately, and leave room for check-in, queues and comfort breaks.
Before requesting a quotation, send your island hotel and map link, dates and preferred connection. Ask whether the vehicle booking ends at the mainland pier or continues onto the island, and which ferry costs are included. A return transfer on another date does not automatically provide transport during your stay.
When a private driver can help your family
A private vehicle can help when your family needs several stops, agreed waiting or room for particular equipment. It is still important to match the vehicle and itinerary to your group rather than assuming every car can accommodate the same passengers and bags.
Arrange child seats before booking
Request child seats before confirming the booking. Send each child’s age, height and weight so the seat arrangement, vehicle compatibility, availability and any charge can be checked. Do not assume a suitable seat will be available for an unplanned pickup.
Check passenger and luggage space together
Send the number of adults and children along with the size and number of suitcases, smaller bags, pushchairs and mobility equipment. Passenger seating and luggage space must be checked together. Using an SUV’s additional seats can reduce the space left for bags.

Agree your stops and booked hours
Share your preferred stops and fixed bookings before requesting a quote. Include your intended pickup and finish time, meal breaks and anything your children or older relatives need. A shorter list of places leaves more time at each stop.
Ask what booked hours, waiting, tolls, parking and additional time are included. Changes on the day depend on the agreed schedule and availability, so check before adding a new destination.
